Illustrative tropical river estuary meeting the ocean

The problem

An ocean problem. An upstream beginning.

The shoreline is often where we see plastic pollution. It isn’t always where its journey begins.

Connected by water

What we leave on land
can find its way to sea.

Discarded packaging and other plastic waste can enter roadside drains during rainfall. From there, rivers and canals can carry it toward the coast.

Once plastic reaches open water, recovering it becomes more difficult. Looking upstream creates an opportunity to act earlier—while also addressing how waste is handled on land.

More than a cleanup

Collection is only
part of the answer.

Intercepting plastic is not a substitute for reducing waste or improving collection systems. It is one possible part of a wider local response.

Captured waste needs safe handling, transport, and a responsible destination. Without that, the problem simply moves somewhere else.

Our intended approach

A shared responsibility

A cleaner ocean starts
with all of us.

We’re looking for people and organizations who believe that meaningful change begins upstream.
